Naming the Child

Imam Jafer us Sadiq (a.s) says: -The child is to be named on the night of the 7th day after his /her birth.

The name of the child should be abstracted from the names of Awliyaullah (a.s) for Barakat.

Iman Jafer us Sadiq (a.s) states relating it from Rasulullah (s.a): -

"Barakat always remains in a family if one amidst them bears the name of a Nabi".

Aqa Maula (tus) says: -

It is the Nehaj of the Hudud Kiram (a.s) that the name of a child be proclaimed from the Dai iz Zaman (tus). If not possible than to obtain it from the person holding the raza of the Dai iz Zaman (tus).

The Naming Ceremony:

  • To choose a Naik Ghari (time)

  • To invite the child's Faiji (who will be naming the child)

  • The faiji should get a basket containing: -

  • Quran Majid

  • Kahke Shifa

  • A Naryal (coconut)

  • 2 Paans

  • 2 Soparis

  • A twig of Daram (Pomegranate) tree

  • Jaggery

  • Kajal

  • Red and Yellow Kaccha Dhaga (tied around the naryal)

  • White Jabla and a Topi of malmal cloth (obtained from Aqa Maula (tus) if possible) the edges of which should be covered in Kesar

  • Nazrul Maqam (AS) in the form of Gold Shaped like an 8 numerical figure.

  • Silver Beri for the leg

  • If a girl than Chital, and if a boy than Kalli. All these are to be tied in black thread and kept in the basket.

  • The gift from the faiji is also to be kept in the basket (which may be a gold or silver coin, clothes or etc.)

  •  The faiji sits with the baby on a cushion covered with a red cloth, she faces sitting the Qibla with the baby's head on her right hand. She then clothes the baby with the jabla and topi .she then makes him wear the taveez and nazrul maqam 8 shaped of gold, chital or kalli in the girls or boys hand respectively. Silver beri in the legs. The Nazrul Maqam should later be presented to Aqa Maula (tus).

  • She then writes Alif near the right ear and Noon near the left with kajal.

  • Recites the Azan in the right ear and Iqamat In the left.

  • Then she prays the following in both ears: -

  • Surat al Fateh (Al hamdo)

  • Ayat ul Kursee

  • The last Ayaats of Surat ul Hashr (from: - Hoval lahul laze to Aziz ul hakim).

  • Surat ul Ikhlas (Qul hoval laho ahad)

  • Surat un Naas and Surat ul Falaq

  • Then she say's the baby's name in his / her right and left ear.

  • She makes the baby taste jaggery and kahke shifa.

  • Then gives the gift to the baby.

  • The child is then handed to the mother and the name is announced and mubakbadi (congratulations) is given.

  • Gundar is cooked on this happy occasion.

  • The basket is kept under the baby's cradle all night and the Quran near the baby's head.

The basket is not to be returned empty. It is filled with 7 vatis of Sukha Khopra.
